MS-Sen-B: Musgrove Will Run

Former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove is making it official — he will run for the Senate against his old roommate Roger Wicker:

Former Mississippi Gov. Ronnie Musgrove confirmed to The Associated Press on Friday that he will run for the U.S. Senate.

Musgrove plans to hold a series of news conferences Monday in Tupelo, Jackson, Hattiesburg and Gulfport.

“I’ll be announcing, yes,” Musgrove told the AP in a telephone interview from his law office in Madison County.

With Mike Moore off the table, Musgrove is probably the next best bet, and the early polls that we’ve all seen confirm that he still has a significant level of support in the state.  Will it hold up in a federal election?

This will be an interesting race to watch — whenever it’s held.

  1. Somebody rose to contend this seat.  I was going to be angry if both our people didn’t run.

  2. With a strong Dem candidate (Obama or Edwards), I think NC could be competitiv for both the electoral votes AND the senate seat.

I think NC is a better shot that either KY or MS.

If Obama is the nominee for POTUS, will that be a net plus or minus for Musgrove? Discuss among yourselves.

  3. I’m glad to hear that Musgrove will get in the race.  He’s a smart guy with many good ideas.  Sure, he’s not as progressive on guns, gays, and abortion like Ted Kennedy.  But when you get into fair taxes, education, and trade, you’ll realize that Musgrove is, indeed, a good Democrat.

Also, it’s being reported now that former Rep. Ronnie Shows (D-MS) will also get into the Senate race.  Shows served in the house from 1999-2003.  He got the boot after we lost a seat thanks to redistricting.  Musgrove will end up with the nomination.  Shows would do better trying to get back into the House.

  4. Its bad if Shows runs because then in the jungle primary, the Democrats will split the vote and Wicker will win. We saw this in neighboring LA in 2004. Several Democrats filed (including John Kennedy, the recently turned Republican State Treasurer) but one Republican, David Vitter filed and won the election without need for a runoff.

I’m just glad that Louisiana election law abolished the jungle primary which means in 2008, there won’t be all those Democrats splitting the vote.

I think we should get Shows to run for Chip Pickerings old seat (MS-03) as he would be the strongest candidate there.
